Exodus 31:18 – How can God have fingers?
QUESTION
The Ten Commandments were written with the finger of God (Exodus 31:18).
But elsewhere the Bible states God is Spirit (John 4:24) and spirits do not have flesh and bones (Luke 24:39).
How can God have fingers?
ANSWER
God does not literally have fingers.
The phrase “finger of God” is a figure of speech indicating that God was directly involved in producing the Ten Commandments.
This is called anthropomorphism (speaking of God in human terms).
The Bible uses many different figures of speech when talking about God such as:
1. the mighty hand and the outstretched arm of God (Deuteronomy 7:19)
2. the wings of God (Psalm 91:4)
