Matthew 16:20 – Does this not contradict His Great Commission?

QUESTION
Jesus commissioned His disciples to go and make disciples of all the nations (Matthew 28:19)

However, again and again throughout His Ministry, He insisted that His followers should tell no one (Matthew 16:20; 17:9; Mark 7:36; 8:30; 9:9; Luke 5:14; 8:56; 9:21)

Does this not contradict His Great Commission?

ANSWER

1. Jesus commanded His disciples to tell no one until the Son of Man is risen from the dead (Matthew 17:9; Mark 9:9). Therefore, there is no contradiction.

2. Sometimes, Jesus was simply trying to keep down the crowds so that He could continue His ministry.

Jesus commanded them that they should tell no one; but the more He commanded them, the more widely they proclaimed it (Mark 7:36).

Jesus charged the leper whom He healed to tell no one. However, the report went around concerning Him all the more; and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities. So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed (Luke 5:14-16).

3. On one occasion, when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed to the mountain by Himself alone (John 6:15). Since this was not the purpose of His coming to the earth, He withdrew from them, for His purpose was to die on the cross and give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45) and lay down His life for the sheep (John 10:10,15).
